Basic Needs Initiative
Providing personal care items for local families in need.
Every day, many struggling families in Monmouth and Ocean Counties face difficult decisions about how to stretch limited household budgets. Economic hardship in our community has been deepened by rising costs, making it increasingly difficult for many individuals and families to afford basic personal care essentials.
To help address this need, United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties launched the Basic Needs Initiative in November 2021. Through this ongoing program, we provide local families with a consistent supply of personal hygiene products that help relieve financial stress while promoting health, dignity, and well-being.
In addition to distributing Family Hygiene Bags, UWMOC also provides Teen Hygiene Bags and Senior Comfort Bags to support community members at different stages of life. These programs help ensure that essential personal care items reach those who need them most.
Did You Know?
Many personal care items cannot be purchased with government assistance programs such as SNAP benefits. As a result, families already struggling to afford food, housing, and other necessities often have to choose between purchasing hygiene products and covering other essential expenses. Your support helps bridge that gap by providing items that promote health, dignity, and confidence.
Items Needed
We are currently collecting new, full-size, branded personal care products, including:
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Body wash or bar soap
- Feminine hygiene products (tampons and ultra-thin pads)
- Men’s and women’s deodorant
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Children’s 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 shampoo and conditioner
- Children’s toothpaste
- Children’s toothbrushes
Ways to Participate
Shop Our Wish Lists
Purchase personal care items through our online wish lists and have them shipped directly to the UWMOC office.
Donate Items
Purchase items in stores and drop them off at our office.

Make a Monetary Donation
Financial contributions help us purchase essential personal care items and assemble hygiene bags for local families, teens, and seniors throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Every $30 donation provides one Family Hygiene Bag, helping to ease the financial burden of everyday necessities for a local household.
